Probiotic Yogurt for $80 per gallon? NO!

June 3, 2016

There is absolutely no way I will pay $80.00 USD for a gallon of yogurt. I cannot believe one of Mom’s doctors even suggested this company.

I took mom to a doctor because there was a suspicious mass in her breast. It had to be removed and tested and this guy was the recommended surgeon for the job. The surgery went well, the mass turned out non-malignant, so that was a relief.

In the waiting area, the doctor came to tell Dad and me how things went. During our conversation he suggested a specific brand of yogurt. According to him, the specific probiotics in this yogurt were shown by studies to help reduce the inflammation of arthritic conditions, stave off some cancers, and create a better overall environment in the bowels.

I used my smart phone to look it up while waiting to see mom. I almost needed and AED! The US website listed the starter kit as $495.00 (normally $595 but you save $100)!

Now, I love my mother. She cannot afford $500 for yogurt. I cannot afford to buy it for her. “But, it is only $2.47 per day!” Just stop it.

Instead, I spent several hours online looking up the ingredients. I found a yogurt starter on Amazon that matched. The box contains six packets of starter, enough to make six quarts of yogurt. Now let’s do a little math.

First, since what I found included a storage bag and storage cups, let’s take off $50 for that and use $445 as the cost for the starter. (I could not find anything that says what is actually in the starter kit.)

$445 / 180 days = $2.47 for four ounces, the suggested daily consumption.

$2.47 / 4 ounces is $0.62 per ounce, $0.62 * 128 ounces (gallon) = $79.36 per gallon.

To make my own yogurt with the yogurt starter from Amazon

$3.00 for a gallon of whole milk

$1.27 per quart for the yogurt starter (one pack makes six quarts) * 4 quarts to a gallon = $5.12

$3.00 milk + $5.12 yogurt starter = $8.12 per gallon or $0.06 per ounce, $0.24 per suggested daily consumption.

You may have onetime costs associated with the purchase of a yogurt machine and jars.  I did not. I used mason jars I already own and the pot pouch I made some time ago and a good yogurt recipe I found.

I am experimenting with a few flavors but have already made two batches of yogurt.
