Shelters Are Full. Stop Breeding.

October 13, 2013

The Lucasville Swap Meet was a lot of fun yesterday. One thing that did bother me deeply was the number of dogs and cats “for sale.” Shelters across the nation are full and people are breeding more.

It just breaks my heart.

“No Kill” shelters are becoming the rage. As much as I love the Cinderella story of the no kill, it really isn’t realistic. “No Kill”‘ is exceptionally expensive.

Craigslist and free papers are full of people trying to give away pets. Eventually these irresponsible people will discover they can dump Snowball’s babies at the no kill shelter and someone will take them. It’s a terrible cycle.

Soon, no kill shelters are overrun with animals, they struggle to have enough food for them, staff become overworked and slack, and the potential for disease increases substantially.

I am not a government involvement person. I don’t think we need to create new laws to stop this. If we could make it less chic to have a puppy-mill or “papered” pooch or kitten, maybe we can impact the demand and effect the supply. This must be done by society.
