Four almost one year I have been driving my mother to medical appointments. I have shared some of my frustrations and worries with you here. Now, I may have worries of my own.
I try to keep a diabetic emergency kit at my house for my Mom. I keep glucose tablets, gel, drink shots, a few syringes, and a test kit. If I take her somewhere far from home I grab the kit. She doesn’t know. I simply place it in the back seat of my truck.
Anyway, the little test kit says to use it within a year of pulling the plastic off the battery. I pulled the plastic in order to run the calibration test. The year will be up soon so I decided I will keep track of my blood sugar for a few weeks. I don’t know if I need to worry or move along.
I find that my blood sugar will drop below 80 within a couple hours of having breakfast. It drops lower after eating raisin bran cereal than if I eat a bowl of a high protein fiber cereal. I feel more hungry after the fiber cereal than the raisin bran.
This image is from a phone app that I log my readings into. I am not sure what to think of it.
Eighty-one percent of the tests were within normal ranges. Fifteen percent of the time I was hypoglycemic. If I compare that to the way I feel when I am overly hungry, I would change those numbers a bit. When my blood sugar is in the mid to low 80’s I am fidgety, distracted, and starting to feel the need to eat. That is not technically hypoglycemic, but I feel the effects of lowering blood sugar.
I wonder what the percentage has to be to signal a problem>
