Make Vanilla Extract

March 29, 2025

Today I managed to decant some vanilla extract I started last year, start some vanilla sugar, and lemon extract. I also made two loaves of wheat bread.

Vanilla extract is easily made, but not cheap.

Vodka is the generally preferred alcohol for beginners. You can then start trying various types to craft a unique blend. Use a mid-shelf brand.

The vanilla beans are also expensive. They are the fruit of an orchid and are grown in tropical conditions. Madagascar and Mexico are the top producers. You can find them at grocery stores but you will pay heavily for the amount you need.

You need eight ounces of vodka for one once of beans. Split the beans lengthwise. Use a glass jar with lid. Fill with vodka, add split beans, cover and store in a cool dark place. Shake the jar every few days. Within four to six months your extract should be perfect!

Strain the extract but save the beans! Make a mother jar to keep your used beans in, covered with vodka, add future used beans and soon you will have a steady supply of.

Yry it and share your experience in the comments!
