Waste Not – Mason Jar Upcycling

August 3, 2015

One thing I cannot tolerate is the purchase of perfectly good Mason jars to use as decoration. There are just too many other options. Let me show you one.

Most, if not all, of the Mason Jar project you see can be achieved using other types of jars. As an upcylcer, I hate to see someone spend money on materials if they don’t have to.

I made the “candy corn” jar in the photo using a Mason Jar. The jar isn’t new. In fact, it is flawed. The rim of the jar is chipped, and cannot be used for canning food. The chip is irrelevant to this project. I just needed to file the chip so it would not cut someone. The jar will be used as a vase for an autumn flower arrangement.

A chipped Mason jar is perfect for this upcycle project.

The other jars in the photo are also chipped. One is simply a mayonnaise jar. I also use jelly jars, peanut butter jars, and pickle jars in my projects.

Please, please, please, think outside the box stores. Use imaginative and creative options to avoid purchasing new materials. Ask family and/or friends to keep jars for you. Check yard sales and flea markets. Work to keep more out of the trash, and less being purchased new.
