Have you ever found a gem hiding in plain sight? I was looking for a storage solution for the bathroom at the Big House. I found this poor fella at the Union Mission Store for $26. My was he in rough shape.
I figured I would strip and repaint the cabinet to match the decor of the bathroom. I would use it to store towels and wash clothes. Two of the drawers were goofed up so I could remove them and use baskets for soaps, shampoo, and other little things. I would paint a script “H” in the oval.
I fired up the heat gun and went to work. The more paint I removed the more surprised I became. Under all that gross, brown gloss paint was a nice Waterfall style tallboy, complete with original metal and celluloid pulls!
There are condition issues. The back has been replaced with a sheet of paneling. Veneer is missing along the bottom and a large spot on top. Some of the cat scratches are too deep to sand out. But just look at that inlaid design! How gorgeous is that?
I’ve tried my best to find an example of this tallboy. I can get close, but I have not yet found the same pulls or inlaid design. I still think it is a sweet piece of Art Deco period furniture. I don’t think I will use it in the bathroom now. How can I paint it? I will oil it then I don’t know what I will do with it.
What gems have you found lately?
