Many people in my age bracket are dealing with aging parents and and the challenge of how to help them. Over the past three years I have struggled with the needs of my mother, my own household, and my business.
My next book is about the challenges I faced during these years. Knowing there is more to this than merely my point of view, I am doing research on the experiences of others, medical aspects of aging, and advice from expert agencies.
A subject search of the online library found several pages of book. Most books listed were fiction. It took a bit of searching but I settled on four. Two were compilations of personal stories, one a memoir of a medical doctor’s experiences treating the aged, and one a reference guide by a well known senior focused non-profit.
I just finished the first compilation book. There is some good information, but it is not relevant in most ways. The families presented are financially stable. They have chosen assisted living while their minds were still good. The biggest issue faces was the guilty feelings of the daughters or sons sending the parent off.
So far, very little of the stories are like mine. But I have some good basic info to start. Next I am reading the doctor’s book. I just couldn’t deal with another compilation right now.
